The risk of breaking and entering is a real one in today’s world. A home burglary happens about once every 15 seconds or so, so it’s a threat you need to be aware of.
There are dozens of potential strategies for deterring or catching potential thieves in action. Some of them work wonders, while others really only give you a false sense of security. Here are some methods that have been proven to work – and some that don’t really help you much at all.
A home alarm system is one of the best ways to deter burglaries from targeting your home. A monitored security system means that if they do attempt to get in, you have a trained professional ready to take appropriate action any time, day or night. The size and scale of monitored security systems vary greatly, from basic alarm systems to high-tech combinations of home security cameras and sensors. When your home is protected by a monitored security system, you can have the peace of mind that someone is always on alert to make sure your home is safe.
There’s a myth that simply having a company alarm sign in your yard deters burglars – that is, that the mere thought that you might have a security system installed is enough to give you protection. There are two problems with that: first of all, if you don’t actually have an alarm system, you’re just relying on the power of persuasion to convince burglars to leave you alone, and are defenseless against more daring burglars who might call your bluff. Secondly, burglars usually force a door or window open. If there isn’t an audible siren, they immediately know that your house is not protected by an alarm system. Furthermore, even if the alarm goes off, they sometimes wait outside nearby your home to see if any person or officer responds to the alarm. If not, they know that your home has a local alarm system and that it is “safe” to break-in.
No burglar wants to be caught, and the thought of having their illegal actions recorded on camera is enough to deter most potential thieves. You’ll want outdoor security cameras with night vision and a decent hard drive, allowing you to record plenty of video. You’ll want indoor security cameras to guard your most important rooms. With high definition cameras, even if a burglar does attempt to gain access to your home, you’ll have the information you need to help the police catch them.
You may think that leaving the lights on, even when you’re not home, will trick burglars into thinking your home is occupied. Think again, though – when was the last time you left your lights on 100% of the time when you were home? A static pattern of lights – either always on or always off – is a tip-off to burglars that no one is home controlling their pattern. What you do want is home automation – a program that flips your lights on and off throughout the course of the day, better simulating what it would be like if you really were home.
